ChatGPT as My Co-Pilot: Data Meets the Open Road

The weather in the Netherlands quickly turns from warm summer days to 6 months of rain somewhere around the end of September/beginning of October. With a strong desire to get one last motorcycle touring trip in on my trusty steed, I sat down at my local brown café with my local Amsterdam friends to discuss some route ideas for an 8-day trip.

While brainstorming over a Duvel beer about how to ride to the warmest weather as fast as possible, I had an epiphany:  why don’t I ask ChatGPT where I should ride? My initial prompts on my phone started out a bit too precise, but I soon loosened up to “make an 8-day loop around France or Spain, leaving from Amsterdam, and get me to the warmest weather as soon as possible.” Eventually, I added in, use Airbnb BnB for highway travel and camping for backroads.

Motorcyclists use what’s called .gpx files to find the best twisty back roads; we consider highway kilometers the most boring part of the trip.  While Google and Apple maps offer the fastest or most fuel-efficient route between two points, .gpx files on a Garmin or TomTom navigator keep us on the exact roads we want.

Next, I considered reading the route that ChatGPT created for me and creating a map with .gpx files myself….but hold on a sec, perhaps ChatGPT can create the .gpx files for me, and furthermore, the exact type for my navigation unit. Much to my surprise, yes! But how far should I ride each day? And where should I stay and dine afterwards? Yet another refinement of the prompt, and I had a separate .gpx file for each day with suggestions for accommodation and dining.

Post-trip: Did I follow the exact route? No…the human factor! As I was riding along, I spotted plenty of cafes for lunch along the south coast of France and along beautiful mountain vistas that weren’t suggested. At each campsite and café, fellow motorcyclists suggested routes and offshoots I hadn’t considered.

So, what sort of tricks has this old dog learned?

– The potential of AI is mind-blowing, but it does require us to use our creativity to understand the possibilities.

– Speak to ChatGPT more like a hotel concierge or travel agent and less like you’re searching for accommodation on an app or writing an SQL query.

– Don’t forget the human element, AI isn’t perfect and it’s far from spontaneous

Using AI in your personal life will allow you to dream up use cases in your professional life

Happy prompting and see you down the road!
